PICTORIAL GRADING OF 5 CENT 1874H QUEEN VICTORIA(1871-1901),GOOD CONDITION

Ironically, in coin grading term, good condition coin denotes the following:

  • a coin that has a minimum visible condition;
  • the coin is so worn that most of the details are almost flat.Part of the lettering may be illegible
  • it may have fine scratches or minor edge nicks
  • in parts, it may be corroded, stained or have patina on it.
  • it is not a desirable condition to collect and should be used as a “filler” for coin that are difficult to come

Let’s look at the obverse of this 5 cent 1874H Queen Victoria, the details of the bust is barely visible but the lettering is still visible.

Interestingly though, this 5 cent 1874H is actually quite a scarce coin which has a mintage of 60,000 and also formed one of the early date of the 5 cent Queen Victoria family.( first 5 cent coin started from 1871 with mintage of 60,000; 1873(mintage:60,000) and then this 1874H coin. For those Straits Settlements coins collectors perhaps, this coin can acts as filler to their collections until they can find one with  better condition.
