In the olden days, the Malaya Japanese Invasion (JIM) banknotes popularly known as “banana money” ( due to the $10 banknote depicting the banana trees) were considered as worthless like tissue paper as there are many of them around. However, as time passed, many banknotes have been destroyed . For Malaya JIM banknotes, paper money collectors normally looks for the scarcer Serial Number banknotes.

Below extracted from the numismatic book  “The Japanese Occupation of Malaya (Singapore) and its Currency by Wong Hon Sum are some details of the various serial numbers of the Malaya Japanese Invasion banknotes

Series 1 : $1 MA & MB Serial Number JIM banknotes:

  • 1 st digit of serial number preceded by block MA starts from “0” and ends at “9”
  • 1 st digit of serial number preceded by block MB starts from “0” and ends at “4”
  • An estimated of 150K pieces of $1 note this series has been printed &
  • Amongst the MA and MB, Serial Number MB is harder to find

Series 1:$5 MA & MB Serial Number JIM banknotes:

  • 1 st digit of serial number preceded by block MA starts from “0” and ends at “9”
  • 1 st digit of serial number preceded by block MB starts from “0” and ends at “3”
  • An estimated of 140K pieces of $1 note this series has been printed

Series 1:$10 MA & MB Serial Number JIM banknotes:

  • 1 st digit of serial number preceded by block MA starts from “0” and ends at “9”
  • MB with serial number are rare and only notes that have “0” as their 1st digit are seen

However,there is an increasing trend of collecting  ALPHABET Malaya Japanese Invasion (JIM) banknotes. In fact, one dealer informed the writer that as many as 180 books of the JIM book by Mr. Wong Hon Sum has been sold which show the increasing popularity of collecting these Malaya Japanese Invasion (JIM) banknotes. Personally, in my shop I have also sold quite a number of set of uncirculated copies of the normal JIM banknotes and scarcer set of alphabet JIM banknotes.

A bit of details on the 50 cents JIM banknote:

  • the very hard to find is the Alphabet MB which is well sought after by collectors in whatever condition
  • MA and MB are without watermark whilst MC to Mt is with watermark
  • Total banknotes comprise 20 pieces (MA to MT)
  • 50 cents has no block letter in Fractional Plate letter

For the Series 2 Alphabet $1 JIM note:

  • Comprise block letters from MB through MO inclusive of MS a total of 15 known
  • All “M” have vertical sides.According to World War II Remembered, block letter MR exists
  • MO have surfaces having a cloth-like texture called ” woven paper” on their backs

For the Series 2 Alphabet $5 and $10 JIM banknotes:

  • $5 JIM – from MB to MK inclusive of MR a total of 11 known, have vertical sides , $5 MM, MO & MP exists and MK is of woven paper
  • $10JIM- from MB to MN inclusive of MP a total of 14 known, have vertical sides. “M” with splayed sides are found only in series 3 & MO exists.
