Coins defects due to Improper Storage Materials

As collectors of coins, both for pleasure and investment , we need to understand the impact of different  storage materials  on our coins:

  • Copper and silver coins stored next to PAPER containing sulphur compounds which is a common chemical used in the manufacture of many paper products always results in the coins being pitted or discoloured.
  • Coins stored in PLASTIC containers whose make-up is not chemically inert will often react with the plastic causing stains to appear on the coins. Please especially note that the biggest culprit is a plastic called polyvinylchloride or called PVC. Used those that are made of mylar or other inert ingredients.

However, please do not confused the above coins pitted or  discoloration with coin tarnished or toned which actually makes especially silver coin to take on stunning multicolored hues of blue, green, gold or pink which increase in “ eye appeal “ and value as collectors look specifically for  same.

All in all, in the short term, truly there will be the additional costs of buying good storage materials but I believe it will translate into additional value in the future for your coins.
